HOMEWORK
How we can work together to help our children/pupils with homework?
Why give homework?
- To help the child to remember what she/he did during the day.
- To strengthen and develop a link between home and school.
- To establish good habits in the child's day.
- To help the child feel better about him/herself by being able to complete homework on his/her own.
How often is homework given?
- Homewok is given on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
- Sometimes, as a treat, children may be "let off" homework.
- A child may have homework on Friday if homework hasn't been done during the
week.
Time?
Junior Infants 5-10 minutes
Senior Infants 10-15 minutes
1st /2nd classes up to 30 minutes
3rd/4th classes up to 40 minutes
5th/6th classes up to 1 hour
What is the content of homework?
Infants
- Talking to your child and reading stories
- Nursery rhymes
- Simple counting
- Practising words when given
1st/2nd Classes
- Listen to reading
- Examine spellings/tables
- Maths in workbook/copy
- English
Religion - prayers and songs to learn
3rd/4th/5th/6th Classes
- Listen to reading
- Examine spellings and tables
- Written work in Maths, English, Irish, History, Geography or Science
- Practice handwriting
- Religion - prayers and songs to learn
Role of the parent
- Turn off the T.V. and radio.
- Set aside a special time.
- Show interest in your child's homework.
- Check and sign the homework journal.
- Let the teacher know if your child is having problems.
- Praise and encourage your child.
Role of the teacher
- To be consistent about the amount and type of homework given.
- Try to make sure the child is able to do the work.
- To give the child enough time to take homework down.
- To check homework.
- To explain to parents how to use the homework journal.
- To check that the child is successful and rewarded with praise
